The neighborhood is home to Phineas Banning High School, named for the community's 19th-century founder, and to Harbor Teacher Preparation Academy, which has been ranked among the top high schools in Los Angeles and the state. This concentration of schools, including a nationally recognized campus, makes education a significant asset for families in a neighborhood that is otherwise defined by its port and industrial economy.

Wilmington is exceptionally well positioned for a harbor-area community. The I-110 Harbor Freeway runs directly through the neighborhood, connecting it north to downtown Los Angeles and south to San Pedro and the Port of Los Angeles, while nearby freeways and arterials link to Long Beach, Carson, and the wider South Bay. The neighborhood sits adjacent to the port complex and its freight rail network, and Metro bus routes provide transit connections across the harbor area. This combination of freeway access and proximity to one of the world's busiest ports makes Wilmington a practical base for workers in the logistics, shipping, and industrial sectors.

Wilmington's recreational and cultural assets are rooted in its history. The Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, housed in the last remaining building of a 19th-century Union Army post, is a notable landmark, and the Banning Museum preserves the home and legacy of the community's founder. Neighborhood parks and community centers provide local green space, while the adjacent cities of San Pedro and Long Beach offer waterfront recreation, marinas, and beaches within a short drive. The Port of Los Angeles itself is a destination, with harbor tours and events that connect residents to the working waterfront that defines their community.
